Rize and Çamlıhemşin region is among Turkey's most photographed destinations. Most of the millions of cloud sea, wooden plateau and waterfall photos shared on Instagram and Pinterest are taken from this region. Whether you're a professional photographer or a traveler wanting to capture beautiful shots with their smartphone, this list is for you.
1. Huser Plateau - Sea of Clouds
**Best Time:** September-October mornings, 30 min after sunrise
One of Turkey's most striking sea of clouds views forms here. Altitude is around 2400m and 4x4 vehicle or tour company is required. Prepare to wake up early.
2. Pokut Plateau - Wooden Houses and Fog
**Best Time:** Summer mornings or autumn days
The composition of traditional Hemşin houses with the background forest and mountains gives magnificent results with wide-angle lenses. Villagers are usually warm to photography.
3. Fırtına Valley - Historical Bridges
**Best Time:** Spring (April-May) or Autumn
Photos of Fırtına Creek flowing under Ottoman-era stone bridges are enchanting with the water turning into silk in long-exposure shots. ND filter recommended.
4. Zilkale - Mountain Castle Silhouette
**Best Time:** Afternoon (western light)
When photographed up close, the castle creates a strong structural composition; when shot as a silhouette from afar, its dramatic position within the valley emerges better.
5. Palovit Waterfall - Long Exposure
**Best Time:** Summer and Autumn
This high-flow waterfall, when shot with long exposure technique (tripod+ND filter), takes on a milky water curtain appearance. Lens protection may be needed due to humidity near the waterfall.
6. Ayder Plateau Panorama
**Best Time:** Early morning, slightly foggy days
When viewed from the upper part of the plateau, the image formed by Ayder houses with Fırtına Valley panorama is a must for wide-angle lenses.
7. Tea Fields - Çamlıhemşin Roads
**Best Time:** May-June, harvest period
Photos of Hemşin women picking tea in their traditional clothes during harvest are among the region's most authentic human photographs. Asking permission before shooting is important for respecting local culture.
8. Samistal Plateau - Wildflowers
**Best Time:** June-July
At over 2000m at the foothills of Kaçkar, this plateau is covered with hundreds of different colored wildflowers from purple to yellow in June. A great location for macro photography.
9. Night Photos - Star Trails
**Best Time:** July-August, new moon periods
For star trail photos in front of snowy Kaçkar peaks, facilities above Ayder or far from light pollution like Almara serve as perfect bases.
10. Autumn Colors - Forest Transitions
**Best Time:** October-November
From mid-October when forests turn yellow, red and orange, is considered the golden season of Rize photography.
Almara Bungalow is located 20-45 minutes from most of these photo locations. We're happy to assist with special early breakfast requests for early shots.
