Settled on the northern slopes of Rize, the Hemşin people possess one of Turkey's most unique cultural heritages. This community, believed to carry Persian and Armenian origins, has developed a unique culture in the isolated mountain valleys of the Black Sea for centuries. When you visit Çamlıhemşin and surrounding villages, you can feel traces of this culture at every corner.
Foundations of Hemşin Culture
The Hemşin people's culture is primarily based on a lifestyle intertwined with nature. This community, which lives in plateaus with their animals in summer and descends to coastal plains in winter, has developed its own language (Hemshince), music (tulum and drum-zurna), architecture (stone and wood towers) and cuisine in its geography isolated by high mountains.
Historic Baths
In the Hemşin region, various historic baths from the 18th and 19th centuries exist. These baths are not just bathing facilities, but social meeting and socializing spaces. Main historic baths known in the region:
Çamlıhemşin Bath
Located in the town center and still actively used. Preserves a historic atmosphere with its original architectural elements.
Ayder Hot Springs
Strictly speaking, hot springs and bath are not the same; however, the historic hot spring facilities at Ayder are the liveliest representatives of the healing tradition developed by Hemşin people over centuries. In these hot springs where water reaches 55 degrees, traditional treatments are applied against rheumatic diseases.
Hemşin Music: Tulum
The most recognized element of Hemşin culture is the local 'tulum' instrument. Air blown from a leather bag is transmitted to the double-reed melody section to produce continuous sound. In weddings, festivals and celebrations, drum-zurna and tulum are played together.
During plateau festivals held in certain periods of the year (especially July-August), you can witness live tulum and horon performances.
Traditional Hemşin Architecture
Hemşin houses have practical architecture shaped by the climate:
The finest examples of plateau houses can be seen in Pokut, Sal and Elevit plateaus.
